The rupture of the B1 dam of the Córrego do Feijão mine, in Brumadinho, caused the spread of 12.7 million m³ of tailings, arising from the iron mining process that disfigured the trough of the Ferro-Carvão stream, therefore affecting the water quality from the Paraopeba River from Brumadinho to the Retiro Baixo dam.

Most of the residues were spread over an area of about 300 hectares, which goes from where the dam was to the confluence of the Ferro-Carvão stream with the Paraopeba River. Part of the material reached and spread through the Paraopeba River, affecting the water quality and bringing a high concentration of sediments. Consequently, that impacted the air and soil, killing or causing damage and losses to wildlife and domestic animals.

To evaluate the impacts and consequences of this disaster on the natural environment and the biotic environment, the subprojects were divided into three subcategories:
