On January 25, 2019, the B1 tailings dam at the Córrego de Feijão Mine in Brumadinho (MG) ruptured causing widespread environmental, socio-economic, and human devastation. In the wake of the disaster, economic, social and environmental impacts have accumulated, which must be measured in order to allow for reparation.

The main objective of Subproject 23 - Determination of organic compounds in tailings - is to determine qualitatively and quantitatively the organic compounds in soil and tailings samples to be collected by Subproject 08 in the areas where the B I, B IV and B IV-A dams were located and in the areas near the tailings spreading in the sub-basin of the Ferro-Carvão stream, in Brumadinho (MG). With the rupture of Vale's dam on January 25, 2019, in Brumadinho, approximately 13 million cubic meters of mining tailings were released into the environment, directly impacting several nearby communities, including buildings owned by Vale itself.

The Brumadinho UFMG Project is composed of 67 subprojects that seek to identify and assess the emergency needs of the populations affected by the rupture of dam B1 of the Córrego do Feijão Mine, which occurred two years ago. A vital part of the research methodologies of the four research axes (Environmental, Socioeconomic, Health, and Infrastructure) is the fieldwork.

[IMAGES] Veterinary subprojects perform field collections!

The first veterinary projects to enter the field were those that provide for the collection of biological samples, such as blood, fur, feces and urine, for toxicological and histopathological tests. After the tests, it will be possible to understand the impact of the Brumadinho environmental disaster on the health of animals living in the Paraopeba River region.

The subproject 05 is carrying out the capture of wild animals in the forests, through the placement of traps, by active search and by camera traps.

How will the tax situation of municipalities be analyzed?

The Córrego do Feijão Mine disaster has brought economic impacts to the municipalities involved. The fiscal situation of the cities is one of the dimensions affected, a consequence of the restrictive measures imposed for precautionary reasons and the paralysis of Vale's activities, which reduced the value of production and income of these localities. At the same time, the demand for public services has increased, considering the situation of greater economic and social vulnerability of families in the post-disaster period.
