Subproject 03

Characterization and Assessment of the Population Affected by the Disruption of the Córrego do Feijão Mine in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais

The main objective of this project is to collect information to characterize the population of the municipalities affected by the collapse of the Córrego do Feijão dam in Brumadinho. In addition to sociodemographic information, this register will allow us to identify the affected population and the damage suffered, and characterize the nature and intensity of this damage.

These goals are broken down into:

  • Propose a typology of impacts and damages for the construction of a primary data collection instrument in the area affected by the disaster, considering the following dimensions (but not limited to them): socioeconomic, environmental, health, education, urban and household structures , material and intangible cultural heritage, livelihoods of riverine populations, basic services, livelihoods and public safety.
  • Develop a sampling strategy and instrument for collecting primary data on the territory that houses the affected population in the 19 municipalities in the area of influence of the disaster;
  • Build a georeferenced database with the affected population and their homes;
  • Build a conceptual model that will guide the stages of data collection and analysis, as well as the identification and assessment of the levels and intensities of damage suffered by the affected population;
  • Build a typology of damage to the population affected by the disaster, even considering the intensity of the damage;
  • Based on the primary data and other information generated during the research, make a series of proposals for mitigating the negative impacts resulting from the disaster.

Methodological steps

1st Stage - Qualitative Exploratory: in-depth interviews with a semi-structured script and focus groups to explore the different nuances of impacts and support the construction of Quantitative Questionnaires with impact indicators to be applied to the entire population surveyed;

2nd Stage - Quantitative Explanatory: Population registration and Sample Survey of nineteen municipalities with collection of quantitative data on sociodemographic characteristics of household residents and questions on impact indicators created based on the results of Stage 1;

3rd Stage - Qualitative Confirmatory: based on the findings of the first two stages regarding the impact indices and their gradations, a list of the necessary recovery and reconstruction needs will be compiled, as well as a presentation of the impact typologies and their multiple degrees and complexity.
