Subproject 53

Determination of the Cause of Death of Wild and Domestic Animals

The main objective of this subproject is to determine the cause of death of wild and domestic animals that died in communities and rural properties in the study area in the Paraopeba River basin. This purpose unfolds into the following specific objectives:

  • Carry out the histopathological evaluation of organs and tissues collected from dead wild and domestic animals, which are necropsied under subproject 06;
  • Carry out additional serological, microbiological and molecular pathology tests, among others, on biological samples collected from animals necropsied in subproject 6, in order to confirm etiological agents in the animals in addition to the histopathological findings for differential diagnosis purposes;
  • Carry out the integrated assessment of the necropsy data produced under subproject 6, the toxicological data of subproject 25 and the results to be obtained in this call, in order to produce a technical report, by a legally qualified professional, with the determination of the etiology and cause of death of each animal evaluated.

Methodological steps

1st Step – The histopathological processing of samples will be carried out according to standard methods and protocols used in veterinary pathology laboratories. During histopathological examination, all tissues will be evaluated for the presence or absence of lesions;

2nd Stage – Recording the histological diagnosis for each organ together with a detailed description of the lesions for the issuance of the anatomopathological report. The joint evaluation of the animal's history, macroscopic and histological lesions may allow the anatomopathological conclusion about the disease that affected the animal;

3rd Step – Selection of one or more auxiliary tests, in case previous findings are not sufficient for a definitive diagnosis. In addition, when necessary, histochemical staining (special) of selected tissues will be performed with previous histopathological evaluation. These stains are necessary to visualize infectious agents in tissues (bacteria, fungi and parasites) or to identify certain cell types;

4th Stage – Cataloging of sample materials, which will be available to the CTC and to the Court.
