Subproject 26

Determination of Metals and Metalloids in Musculature and Viscera of Fish from the Paraopeba River Basin

This subproject aims to determine the presence and concentration of contaminating metals and metalloids, primarily aluminum, total arsenic, cadmium, lead, copper, chromium, iron, manganese, total mercury, nickel, vanadium, uranium and zinc, in collected musculature and viscera of fish from the Paraopeba River basin, in addition to selenium that has a protective effect on the toxic effect of mercury. This unfolds into the following specific objectives:

  • Development and validation of a method for detection (identification) and quantification of metals and metalloids in biological matrices musculature/fillet and viscera collected from fish;
  • Determination of the presence and concentration of metals and metalloids in the musculature/fillet and viscera biological matrices collected from fish in the collection call No. 4/2019;
  • Evaluate and estimate possible interferences of the contamination of fish by metals and metalloids in human health and life, as well as in fishing practices.

Methodological steps

1st Stage – Team training in relation to CRA rules, biosafety, laboratory quality and ABNT standards, preparation of materials and samples, equipment operation and analysis of results;

2nd Stage – Validation of decontamination processes for materials and equipment;

3rd Step – Sample preparation;

4th Step – Standardization and validation of a method for determining the presence and concentration of total mercury in fish musculature and viscera;

5th Step – Standardization and validation of a method for determining the presence and concentration of metals and metalloids in fish musculature and viscera;

6th Step – Determination of the presence and concentration of total mercury in fish musculature and liver;

7th Step – Determination of the presence and concentration of metals and metalloids in fish muscle and liver;

8th Step – Assessment of human exposure to metals and metalloids through fish consumption;

9th Step – Correlation of metal and metalloid contents in musculature and liver with weight, total length and eating habits of the fish and place of sample collection;

10th Step – Preparation of a scientific dissemination document and booklets with guidelines for the population.
